How a MoCoScore Ranking Is Built, From Screening to Publication
Every Best In MoCo ranking follows the same path: candidates are screened, eligible businesses are verified and scored, and a human review happens before anything is published. Here is what each step actually involves.
Every Best In MoCo ranking follows the same path from first research note to published page. The steps below describe what actually happens, and what does not: no business can buy placement, and no score is assigned without documented evidence.
Screening the field
Research starts wider than the published list. For a recent city ranking, Best In MoCo screened 39 candidate electricians before the analysis began. Screening removes charging-station listings, handymen, energy brokers, supply distributors, satellite or duplicate listings, and businesses with hostile review patterns. What survives is the eligible field.
Eligible means the business serves the Montgomery County area, holds a verifiable active Texas license where licensing applies, is an actual contractor in the category, and is not already a winner on another Best In MoCo city page.
Verification and scoring
Each eligible business moves through the same checks: identity verified, service area confirmed, license records checked with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and reviews pulled newest-first from the relevant source.
The evidence is then scored across the nine MoCoScore categories, weighted from 20 points for customer satisfaction down to 5 each for local presence and professional verification. The result is a single 100-point score that compares very different evidence profiles on the same scale.
Human review and publication
Before anything publishes, a human review pass confirms that every number on the page matches the underlying research. When two sources disagree, the page discloses both figures instead of silently picking one, as we did with a finalist whose scoring dataset showed 21 years in business while BBB reported 25.
Only then does the ranking go live, with its research date, verification date, and editorial disclosure attached.
Best In MoCo Staff
Research Team, Best In MoCo
Best In MoCo is a Montgomery County research publication that answers one question for local residents: who should I hire, visit, or choose? The staff research team builds every ranking the same way, with a repeatable scoring system, defined criteria, verified data, and human review before anything is published. Rankings cannot be purchased, and no business can buy its way onto a list. The team writes about how local businesses earn their reputations, what the MoCoScore methodology measures, and what Montgomery County homeowners should check before hiring.
